Workshops

Workshop A

Media and Celebrity Culture
Presenter: Debbie Johnson

This session, run by the former Pop Editor of the Liverpool Echo will explore celebrity culture in the media and how this impacts upon tobacco imagery in film. Young people will discuss ways in which this can be used as a campaigning tool by youth adocates . This lively, creative workshop will focus on:

  • How a magazine is put together
  • How journalists viewand treat celebrities
  • Youth advocacy andways in which young people can lobby the media, film industries and otherkey groups

As music editor of the Liverpool Echo for 10 years Debbie was known as the Echo’s Queen of Pop with a wealth of celebrity contacts. She was also a senior writer and news desk manager, writing predominantly on arts and entertainment but also on politics and education. Debbie remains active as a freelance journalist for several newspapers is an experienced trainer and works regularly with young people. Debbie has interviewed scores of stars in the TV, film and music industries including Joan Collins, Yoko Ono, Victoria Beckham and Paul McCartney.

Workshop B

The Power of Music in Youth Advocacy

Hosted by MZone

This session will explore music as a means of expression and influence.
Well known Liverpool rap artist TL will facilitate this workshop where youngsters will be encouraged to write and perform their own music. TL will be demonstrating how music can be used as a campaigning tool and work with the young people to explore ways in which this can be done in the field of tobacco imagery and films.

MZONE is part of the Merseyside Music Agency (MMDA) and is the enabling and support service for youth music on Merseyside. MZONE empowers young people to articulate their music needs through specific initiatives designed to profile young music makers and their activities.

TL has been involved in the Liverpool music industry since 1993 and his work has featured on a number of legendary UK producers’ albums. TL Blueprint Hip Hop Productions specialises in rap and DJ workshops.

This workshop promises to be a lively, productive and engaging session with lots of noise!
